Character background:

Tsutomu is a 21 year old man living in Japan with his pet dog.

Tsutomu was born in Tokyo, Japan, to his parents Atsushi and Midori Fujisawa. As an only child who grew up in a modest apartment around the outskirts of the city area, he wasn't exactly the richest guy in the world, and so he grew up to have pretty low standards about life. He was happy about what he had, and didn't ask for much else, be it a fancy mp3 player, a phone, TV, etc. Considering his father worked long hours during the week, he was with his mother more often, so many of his manners, skills, and opinions formed from her influence. He was taught how to clean and a little bit of how to cook. He couldn't do much, since he was just a child, but he worked hard to help his parents anyway he could. His mother was very meticulous when it came to cleaning, so he learned to be a neat freak, just like her. He also loved his father as much as he loved his mother. He was always hoping to see him when he came home, which wasn't often.

Atsushi kept his guitar from his high school days with him, and still had it with him when Tsutomu was born. Every time he was able to see Tsutomu, he would try to teach him how to play guitar a bit. He was always interested in classical music, so he'd try to teach Tsutomu guitar covers of different pieces. The one they worked on the most was the Turkish March, a piece he learned in music class. It was his favorite. Eventually, Tsutomu discovered he had a talent for playing the guitar. As they played together, Tsutomu's father became his hero, and Tsutomu began wanting to be a musician. Atsushi, having never lived out his own dream of becoming a musician, hoped that Tsutomu would be able to fulfill his dream in his place. Tsutomu practiced everyday from that point on.

When Tsutomu turned eight, a recession hit Japan, and his life started to get a lot more difficult. The family had to cut expenses as much as it could. Despite this, bills piled up, and the family sank into debt. Tsutomu's father worked longer hours, and became rougher and ill-tempered. Many times, when he came home, he refused to teach Tsutomu guitar. Tsutomu, in reaction, grew closer to his mother, who always tried to take his side when Atsushi got angry and started arguments. This went on for two years, and it only got worse from there.

One cold winter night, when Tsutomu was ten, Midori and Atsushi had a very serious fight, mostly about financial stress and related things Tsutomu figured, as he didn’t understand much. At that point, Atsushi snapped and went to the room he shared with Midori. An hour later, Atsushi walked out the door with a briefcase in hand and never came back. Tsutomu screamed and cried, but Midori only stood in pained silence. The following Christmas, a few days later, was quiet and sad. Since then, Tsutomu has hated snow and Christmas. It was especially sad, considering snow was such a rare sight in Tokyo.

After a week of no signs of Atsushi, Midori filed some divorce papers. From that point on, Tsutomu’s feelings for his father changed to hatred. His, and his father's, dreams of Tsutomu becoming a musician had been crushed by Atsushi’s departure. Tsutomu didn’t want anything to do with guitar anymore. What confused him most was that Atsushi didn't take his guitar with him, so it was left to collect dust in the closet.

Life was very difficult after that. There was no breadwinner anymore. Midori had to get a job. Since Tsutomu had learned to clean and cook a bit from his mother, he took care of the housework while Midori hunted for work. They moved into a smaller apartment that Midori could afford alone. In High school, Tsutomu developed bookworm tendencies. His mother had many hopes for Tsutomu's future, including his becoming an office manager and finding a wife. Tsutomu grew to be very close to his mother, thanks to his father walking out, and he would have done anything to make her happy. He even gave up his dreams of becoming a musician in favor of a more practical career as a salaryman or manager. He even thought of owning his own company, perhaps a pet business. The musician inside him still haunts him, however, nagging him to pick up the guitar again.

Unfortunately, Midori’s dream of him finding a good wife would never be realized. After dating a few girls, Tsutomu realized he wasn't attracted to them. After he broke up with his last girlfriend, he noticed that there were a few boys in his class that he had an attraction to, especially one that he really noticed during gym class, when they were changing uniforms. It was then that he realized he was gay.
At first, he was in denial. Homosexuality was widely frowned upon, and he didn't want to be judged. However, what he feared most was his mother finding out and being disappointed in him. He promised his mother he would find a good wife who would bear him children, but that was all but impossible now. He eventually decided to tell her someday, and he kept trying to find a good opportunity to tell her. However, she'd always interrupt him with phrases like: "You will find a good wife someday, and I will have grandchildren. That is my only wish for you." To this day, he is secretive about his orientation, because he would feel devastated if his mother ever found out and believed it.

When Tsutomu graduated high school, Midori was proud of her son, and bought him an Akita. She named it Orenji, due to his nearly-orange colored coat (and uncreative choice of names), but later on Tsutomu changed to just Renji. Since then, Renji has become Tsutomu's best friend, and Tsutomu has discovered his affinity with pets.

After graduation, he took a university entrance exam right away. However, his careless rushing caused him to fail. Ever since then, he's been hitting the books and taking cram school to make sure he knows everything. When not studying, eating or sleeping, Tsutomu has two jobs to make ends meet: one as an employee in a convenience store, the other as clerk in a pet shop. Also in an effort to show independence and maturity, Tsutomu moved out of his mother's apartment to live by himself in a more modest one with only his dog for company.

Tsutomu is currently taking a break from cram school to focus on jobs and income to pay rent, and expanses for his dog.

Character Appearance:

Tsutomu stands 180cm tall(5'9 feet), with a skinny build, although working two jobs and daily walking long lengths has given him some muscle definition. His body would be more toned if he had the income to eat healthier. He does not eat as often as he should, and when he does, it's something cheaper. With malnutrition a small problem, along with lack of sleep and time spent mostly indoors, Tsutomu skin's is a bit pale compared to others. The lack of sleep and stress from overworking and other problems shows on his eyes, which have redness and small dark bags underneath.

Tsutomu has short, spiky, cropped hair, which is black in color. His eyes are a dark brown. His wardrobe consists of plain, simple clothes, such as jeans, slacks, polo shirts, and large button plaid overshirts. The wardrobe pallet is full of light blues, blues, and neutral colors. Tsutomu tends to be on the neater side, with clean, ironed clothes, and neat hair.

Character Traits:

Neat freak: Tsutomu absolutely hates messes, and constantly cleans any spills or reorders any form of chaos, from crooked lines to arranged objects. One will always find his home spotless, even though he has a dog at home. If he ever walked out in public with a stain, he'd be humiliated beyond belief!

Humble: Tsutomu rarely ever accepts compliments, and will usually respond to them with "oh no I'm not!" or "oh, it's nothing special!". It's a common characteristic in Japan, but Tsutomu also has low self-esteem that keeps him thinking compliments thrown at him are simply flattery or jokes. He never brags, and is always happy with what he has.

Closet pervert: Despite his prudish exterior, Tsutomu actually has a very healthy sexual appetite, and hides a lot of dirty gay magazines and comics in his room. Perversion and homosexuality is frowned upon in Japan, not to mention there are personal things in Tsutomu's life that makes him this way, but Tsutomu is very ashamed of his orientation and perversion. This is why he denies everything, and tends to loathe himself for this "obsession".

Distant: Despite his friendly politeness, Tsutomu keeps to himself, and doesn't try to make friends easily. He has an intimate view of relationships, and feels that he doesn't deserve to have friends, thinking he's useless and boring. He'll get confused at anyone who calls him a 'friend'. It'll take a lot of energy to make Tsutomu talk about personal things in his life.

Overworker: Tsutomu has a habit of determination to the point of stubbornness. If asked for help, or given a task, he'll go out of his way to get the job done perfectly. He's stayed up at ungodly hours, worked to the point of exhaustion, and is often clumsy due to the constant strain on his body and mind.
